A rooftop sniper guns down 14 pedestrians on the streets of New York City. A mild-mannered dad takes a shotgun and blows away his wife and children. A cop goes on a sudden shooting spree at the St. Patrick's Day Parade. And each of these unlikely killers makes the same dying confession: “God told me to.” Now a repressed Catholic NYPD detective (Tony Lo Bianco) must uncover a netherworld of deranged faith, alien insemination and his own unholy connection to a homicidal messiah with a perverse plan.

Unique sci-fi
Devout Christians likely would take offense to the story. But then again, I know of at least one Christian minister who entertained the idea that the "Divine Intervention" that authored the Old Testament might have been an ancient astronaut who visited Earth eons ago. The idea of Jesus being half-alien is not new, but this story is an interesting twist on that.

Different, but wouldn't watch again.
Movie was unusual, different and well, I thought I'd like it more from all the reviews I've read, but besides the beginning, I just didn't find it too much of a movie I'd watch again. I was bored honestly.

Bizarre thriller that explains why Larry Cohen was a unique cinematic voice...
"God Told Me To" is a strange film, part quasi-religious film and part mystery-science fiction plot. I think this is probably the most memorable role ever given to Tony Lo Bianco for the movies. It is Cohen's ability to combine elements of the TV scenario police procedural with an emotional story involving misidentified faith that makes this his best film, if not always his most enjoyable. Cohen really is a talented visionary, and the fact that he cast the ingenious Andy Kaufmann here (my favorite comedian by far) is a testament to both his foresight and his audacity. It is always interesting to survey the cast of a Larry Cohen production. "God Told Me To" is awkward enough to not be on everyone's list of 'must-sees', but it simply goes to prove that Cohen intended to produce more unusual fare for the Cineplex, and it is sad that those days are long gone. This is, however, a must see film if you like the Cohen stock. The Blue Underground DVD is the usual immaculate treatment, with plenty of great tidbits offered in the Lustig/Cohen commentary track. Now this guy knows how to record an audio commentary! His movies on DVD are always enjoyable. B+

Meh
God Told Me To (4K)Dir. Larry Cohen2/5I just can't understand how movies like this get 4K releases. It just seems like a waste. This movie may have been "edgy" in the 1970s but it's not anymore. There is some biting social commentary but the script just basically blames aliens. If this movie had gone less on a sci-fi direction it would have been better. This also wasn't scary at all and just seemingly had lots of random things happen. The 4K transfer was great though. But again I don't know if movies like this deserve to be on the format. I only bought this to try and expand my collection and watch something I haven't seen. I'm probably not gonna watch it again that's for sure.

God Told Me is perhaps one of the best low budget horror movies of the 1970s
When a Charles Whitman-esque sniper in a rooftop water tower kills a group of New Yorkers, Detective Peter Nicholas (Tony LoBianco) is called to the scene. He climbs up the tower to find a nonchalant young man called Harold Gorman perched in the sunshine. Before he jumps to his death Harold tells him “God Told Me To.” Directed by Larry Cohen (Maniac Cop, It’s Alive), God Told Me is perhaps one of the best low budget horror movies of the 1970s. It follows Nicholas as he discovers a string of bizarre crimes where the only motive seems to be ‘God Told Me To’, and becomes convinced that a much bigger conspiracy is behind this series of events. Part police procedural, part paranoid religious thriller and part science fiction, Cohen’s film makes every penny of its low budget work. Guerrilla filmaking techniques, such as filming as a NYC St Patrick’s Day police parade, add to the sense of authenticity (said scene also features the film Debut of Andy Kaufman as a deranged cop). Recommended.

Hidden Gem
I hadnt heard of this movie but being a fan of Larry Cohen decided to give it a shot. It starts of as a typical 70s cop movie. It has that grainy feel typical of the time. Music and style are the same. Tony Lo Bianco is great in the lead role. A really good story with some surprising twists and turns. (C'mon, its a Larry Cohen film). A really good movie that I am surprised hasnt been remade.A hidden gem and well worth catching.

Brilliant
This is Another Cracker from the Legend that is Larry Cohen. If there was One thing Cohen did best throughout the 70's and 80's it was having no set style,Okay so his films are Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy but they would always do something that wasn't being done at the time and be filled with Mad ideas on a low budget.God Told me to is no exception and is One of his best.
